[1] Christian Defense Coalition Holds Prayer Vigil and Public Witness Friday 15 March 2013 before Wife of Imprisoned American Pastor in Iran Testifies on Capitol Hill

The Christian Defense Coalition on 15 March 2013 in Washington DC led a prayer vigil and public witness prior to the testimony of Naghmeh Abedini, the wife of Pastor Saeed Abedini who is serving an eight year sentence in an Iranian prison because of his Christian faith, before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in the Rayburn Building of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Reformed Presbyterian pastor and Director of the Christian Defense Coalition the Rev. Patrick Mahoney commented prior to the event:

“It is deeply troubling and disturbing that a U.S. citizen would be imprisoned for eight years and brutally beaten in a foreign country for simply being a Christian.

“What is also troubling and disturbing is that President Obama has failed to personally and publicly address this issue and demand the immediate release of Pastor Saeed.

“President Obama’s silence on religious freedom and basic human rights sends a clear message to the world that these issues are not a top priority for this administration.

“We will gather on Capitol Hill first to pray, and ask God to intervene and act on behalf of Pastor Saeed and his family. We will also be praying for the testimony of all the presenters including Naghmeh, the wife of Pastor Saeed.

“We will also stand as a ‘prophetic witness’ for justice reminding the President, Congress and the nation of Pastor Saeed’s imprisonment and the persecution of so many others around the world. America must never be silent on the issue of religious freedom across the globe.”

United Church of Christ members on 15 March 2013 joined members of the Florida-based Coalition of Immokalee Workers on a 200-mile “March for Rights, Respect, and Fair Food” through Florida, which ended Sunday 17 March 2013 with a rally in Lakeland, Florida outside the headquarters of Publix, a grocery chain and Florida‘s largest privately-owned company, which has long refused negotiate with farm workers.

United Church of Christ L(esbian) G(ay) B(isexual) T(ransexual) advocates on 15 March 2013 announced their support of Ohio Republican U.S. Senator Rob Portman‘s announcement that he is now a supporter of homosexual marriage. Senator Portman says he has changed his views and now supports the right for same-sex couples to marry because his son, Will, is homosexual.
