[1] New Pope Prays to Mary

In one of his first acts as “pontiff,” Pope Francis visited Saint Mary Major basilica and “prayed to the Virgin, for the safekeeping of all of Rome” (“New Pope Francis Visits St. Mary Major,” Vatican Information Service, March 14, 2013). At the basilica, the pope “left the Virgin a bouquet of flowers” and prayed to her for about ten minutes. St. Mary’s is one of four “patriarchal basilicas,” meaning they are directly associated with the pope and have papal altars, and nowhere is the deep apostasy of the Roman Catholic Church more evident. Built in about AD 350 it was restored by Pope Sixtus III to commemorate the declaration of Mary’s Divine Motherhood by the Council of Ephesus in 432. The mosaic in the apse depicts Mary sitting on the right hand of Jesus on His throne and being crowned by Him as Queen of Heaven. Another prominent statue of Mary is titled “Mary Queen of Peace.” Outside of the basilica, MARY IS EVEN HANGING ON THE CROSS WITH JESUS! A large crucifix has Jesus hanging on one side and a crowned Mary holding a baby on the other. These images depict Rome’s dogma that Mary is co-redemptrix with Christ and that she intercedes for men and aids in their salvation.

Note the following quotation from the Second Vatican Council: “Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but BY HER MANIFOLD INTERCESSION CONTINUES TO BRING US THE GIFTS OF ETERNAL SALVATION. … Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of ADVOCATE, HELPER, BENEFACTRESS, and MEDIATRIX” (Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, chap. 8, II, 62, pp. 382-383). [2] The Inviolable Laws of Nature and Nature’s God and Marriage

By the Rev. Dr. Michael A. Milton

When the rats begin to scramble on board the ship, it is a sure sign that the boat is sinking.

First the self-described personal freedom loving libertarians and now Karl Rove believes that Conservatives can embrace same-sex marriage, or, just leave it to the State as it is a personal “liberty” matter. The defense seems to be, “Let the Church regulate marriage and leave the State out of it. Let the State allow whoever wants to be married to be married. It is a legal contract, not a religious ceremony, for goodness sake.”

Nonsense.

The nation we live in is grounded in “inalienable rights” that come from God, not from government. This truth is the very ground of our civilization. So, too, just as there are certain God-given or “natural” rights that come to mankind and that government is designed to guard, not dispense or arbitrate but to defend, so there are “inviolable laws” that are incumbent upon mankind. This is not a “religious” matter, but a matter of “natural law” that transcends government and social trends and attitudes. One of those inviolable laws is the law of marriage. It is a “Creation Ordinance” in that it extends to the beginning of humankind. It is embedded in our species as surely as murdering another person is or stealing from another is. Jesus, when questioned about divorce, appealed to this Creation ordinance and he said, “It was not so in the beginning.” He went on to describe marriage as between a man and a woman and in that union, spiritually, physically, and socially, they become one. Biology itself defends the arrangement and without ever appealing to St. Paul, I could appeal the universal law that is placed in man’s heart to defend heterosexual marriage. No one has the right to take away freedom of thought or choice unless that freedom turns to licentiousness by hurting another OR BY DENYING THE INVIOLABLE LAWS of nature and nature’s God.

Make sure that the nation marks this well: a people who will deny the inalienable rights of nature and nature’s God will perish from the earth. For freedom cannot be shackled in the human soul. And be certain of this as well, that when you deny the inviolable laws of nature and nature’s God, including marriage of one man and one woman, that civilization will not stand—cannot endure.

The Church did not invent marriage. The Church (and the Synagogue) seeks to bless what God has placed in the very nature of mankind and the order of His universe.

To give in to libertarian or more accurately licentiate, muddle-headed notions and cries for ignoring what is encoded into the very laws of life is to not only go down with the ship, but share in the culpability of destroying it.

Marriage is an inviolable law that cannot be tampered with by man. It is lunacy and suicidal to think and act otherwise. And that is just what the Republicans are doing if they join the ranks of conscience-seared and sadly mistaken people who so cavalierly dislodge the veritable cornerstone of human civilization.

Michael Anthony Milton (Ph.D., University of Wales) serves as the chancellor/CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary (one of the largest accredited seminaries in the country), a U.S. Army chaplain (instructing at the Armed Forces Chaplain School) and the James M. Baird Jr. chair of pastoral theology at RTS/Charlotte. He is an author, songwriter, singer, ordained minister, former pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, Tenn., and he previously served as the president of RTS/Charlotte. Dr. Milton also hosts a national Bible teaching television program, Faith For Living, broadcast on the NRB Television Network, and a radio program broadcast on several stations in the southeast. For 16 years he served in the business world and has also served as a top-secret Navy linguist.

[3] ‘Traditional Marriage is the Only Constitutional Marriage’ — ‘Christians are Outraged with Unfaithful Obama,’ Says Pastor Steven Andrew

Pastor Steven Andrew, president of USA Christian Ministries, says to obey God and George Washington with God’s Marriage, instead of Barack Obama’s homosexual “marriage”. The reason is so God will bless and heal Americans. Traditional Marriage is the only Constitutional Marriage.

“God and Christians are outraged with unfaithful Obama. Do you see how Obama behaves like Sodom and Gomorrah-wanting the Supreme Court to undermine traditional marriage and California’s Proposition 8? Obama is disobeying God, George Washington, John Adams, John Jay and Thomas Jefferson,” he said.

“The most Christ-like and loving response to sinners is what Jesus said: ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel’ (Mark 1:15),”.

“Our Founding Fathers established God’s Marriage of one man and one woman. All thirteen colonies made Christian laws opposing homosexual sin. All fifty states followed George Washington knows what is Constitutional.”

“Americans won wars by God’s favor with Washington’s laws to court martial homosexuals. There can’t be sin in the camp if you want God’s help.”

“The Declaration of Independence shows men ‘are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights’. God’s unalienable rights are to live for God like our Founding Fathers, not to follow the devil like Obama. Who would be gullible enough to think that God and our Founding Fathers want Americans to sin?”

Andrew’s book “Will You Stand Up for God’s Marriage?” gives five reasons why traditional marriage only is important:

— Love God – God created man and woman marriage (Mark 10:6-7)

— Love One Another – The unrepentant don’t go to Heaven (1Corinthians 6:9-10)

— Be Spared of God’s Judgment – God blesses the obedient (Jude 7)

— Honor Our Founding Fathers – Make Christian laws (Mark 12:30)

— Be Forgiven – Repent (1Corinthians 6:11)

For 237 years the U.S. and the U.S. Supreme Court followed God. Americans have 406 years of God’s Marriage beginning with the Jamestown Settlers.

[4] Joni and Friends ‘Beyond Suffering’ Curriculum Now Available in iBook Format

Beyond Suffering: A Christian View on Disability Ministry” by Joni Eareckson Tada and Steve Bundy, with Pat Verbal and Dr. Kathy McReynolds, is now available as a multi-touch book for the iPad. “Beyond Suffering” is a groundbreaking course of study created to transform the way Christians view God’s plan for disability and suffering and was originally introduced as a curriculum in courses offered at the Joni and Friends Christian Institute on Disability in August, 2010. Since then, it has been released as a textbook for use at other educational institutions around the country, as well as in Spanish and Braille editions.

“At Joni and Friends we recognize that today’s students need textbooks designed for the way they like to learn, so we’re excited to introduce the first ever disability ministry course for iPad users,” said founder and CEO Joni Eareckson Tada. “This dynamic, new format provides students hands-on access to the multifaceted course by combining the Study Guide and Leader’s Guide into one interactive, multi-media book. It’s our prayer that this course, whether in print or on an iPad, will equip the next generation with the skills to think critically about the complex issues impacting people with disability and their world.”

The “Beyond Suffering” curriculum contains 16 lessons organized into four modules: An Overview of Disability Ministry; The Theology of Suffering and Disability; The Church and Disability Ministry; and An Introduction to Bioethics. The Beyond Suffering iBooks Edition takes advantage of all the iPad’s accessibility features for students with visual and hearing impairments.

The iBooks Edition puts the entire course in the palm of the student’s hand:

— The new interactive format provides students instant access to the compelling videos from Joni and Friends’ Award-Winning Television Series and articles from the Leader’s Guide.

— New colorful photos, graphics, videos and links embedded in this multi-touch book will enhance the learning experience for tech-savvy student

— Resources, stats and articles can be added or updated as current issues on disability ministry are in the news.

— Downloadable PDFs of promotional flyers, e-cards, surveys and evaluations are linked for ease of use.

The iBooks Edition contains everything students need to complete the course. However, leaders teaching a large class may want to purchase the “Beyond Suffering Leader’s Guide” for large screen projection or for adapting the PowerPoint slides to personalize the course.

The “Beyond Suffering” iBooks Edition is available on iTunes, with more information online at Joni and Friends.

The original curriculum, as well as the Spanish and Braille versions, are available for purchase online at the Joni and Friends online store, along with an introductory video on the need for these materials featuring Tada, Bundy and other contributors.

For more than 30 years, Joni and Friends has worked to accelerate ministry to the disability community, offering a wide array of life-affirming ministries to people with disabilities around the world. Joni and Friends does this through the Christian Institute on Disability; the International Disability Center; international radio and television programs filled with inspirational stories; Wheels for the World, which every year sees thousands of individuals receive wheelchairs and the life-giving message of the Gospel; and Family Retreats, where families affected by disability learn they are not alone.

[6] Marriage Bill “Completely Nonsensical”: Flat Earth Society Members to Celebrate Marriages under Scottish Government Plans

The Free Church of Scotland on 18 March 2013 published the following press release:

Members of the Flat Earth Society could soon be officiating at weddings in Scotland under plans to redefine marriage by the Scottish Government, according to the Free Church of Scotland.

The Free Church has described the Scottish Government’s plans to create a third category of marriage as “completely nonsensical”.

The comments came as the denomination responded to the second consultation on the redefinition of marriage in Scotland, which it continues to vehemently oppose.

The Scottish Government has said it wishes to establish belief ceremonies as a third type of ceremony, alongside religious and civil, for getting married in Scotland.

A Free Church spokesman said: “The proposal of the Scottish Government to create a third category of belief marriage ceremony alongside the current religious and civil ones is an indication of the increasing confusion that we can expect in the coming months and years.

“Humanists are already able to perform marriages under the religious category and we see no reason why this should not continue.

“Instead we are faced with the Scottish Government seeking to create a new category for something which already happens under the current system, which is completely nonsensical.”

The spokesman continued: “We would also question whether this category only includes humanists or will it allow for any belief? Could the Jedi Knights or members of the Flat Earth Society be registered as belief celebrants?

“We believe that once the legislation is passed the issues and complications will not go away.”

[8] Christians Mark Legacy of Scottish Missionary ’Trailblazer’ David Livingstone

By Peter Wooding, Europe Bureau Chief for ASSIST News Service

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (ANS) — As part of a series of events to mark the bicentenary of David Livingstone’s birth, Christians met this week in Edinburgh to reflect on the legacy of the Scottish missionary and explorer.

Scottish missionary and explorer David Livingstone

Speaking at the conference held by the University of Edinburgh’s School of Divinity the Right Reverend James Tengatenga, Bishop of Southern Malawi, said there was still a sense of “awe” surrounding David Livingstone in his country today.

Livingstone was born in the small Scottish town of Blantyre. He went to Africa as a medical missionary in 1840 and would lead extensive explorations across the interior and central Africa.

Christian Today reported that during the conference Bishop Tengatenga said the explorer had been different from others in his day for the respect he showed indigenous cultures and languages, a respect that often gained the trust of local people and chiefs.

Livingstone’s Legacy

Bishop Tengatenga described Livingstone as an “itinerant trailblazer” who did not understand himself as a typical missionary.

“He was just a small part of the greater work being done by others. He understood missions differently. Exploration was not antithetical to it but integral to it.”

The bishop explained that many Christians in Malawi, including himself, trace their faith in some part back to Livingstone.

“The story [of the church] is not complete without giving David Livingstone a place or role in it. I can’t tell the story of my faith without telling the story of David Livingstone,” he said.

Livingstone was a vocal campaigner against the slave trade and he was concerned about economic development and self-sufficiency not only for the indigenous people, but for the missionaries spreading the Gospel among the people.

“David Livingstone was a visionary, he dreamed of things to come,” said Bishop Tengatenga said.

Poverty Today

The conference also reflected upon the challenges facing Malawi today, including widespread poverty.

The conference was told that less than one per cent of the population of Malawi went to university. Delegates heard that Livingstone would have been disappointed with some of the developments that came after him, including the widespread poverty that exists today.

Missionary Myth

Dr. T. Jack Thompson, of the University of Edinburgh, said a “myth” surrounding Livingstone in Malawi had been created in Livingstone’s time largely by the Scottish missionaries who followed him “because to them he was a hero”.

“We would like to think that we Westerners have transformed Malawi but when you go into the poorest villages, has it really changed all that much since David Livingstone was there in 1859?” he said.

Injust Colonialism

Dr. Ken Ross, Honorary Fellow of the School of Divinity, spoke of the deep sense of injustice that grew with colonialism, saying Livingstone’s legacy was “not without its moments of ambivalence and conflict”.

Malawi in the 20th century would, he said, be characterised largely by a tension between white domination and rising African aspirations.

However, Dr. Ross that the difficult race relations that emerged later with European settlers was “at odds” with Livingstone himself and that the missionary had an “unyielding hostility” towards racism.

Bishop Tengatenga said that while Livingstone had sometimes been blamed for colonialism and accused of plundering the land, he did not believe these had ever been Livingstone’s intention.

Dr. Ross concluded that Livingstone’s influence would be with Malawi “for some time to come”, not least because of his contribution to the Christian faith, the enduring strong relations between Malawi and Scotland, and Livingstone’s vision for social and economic development which continues to inspire new anti-poverty initiatives today.

He said: “It could look like a story of despair but a generation of Malawians is coming up now with entrepreneurial skills that gives us great hope about what the future could be.”

“There are very hopeful signs and as well and I hope this bicentenary will be a chance to celebrate them as well.”

[9] D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship Acquires New Building Two Blocks from U.S. Capitol Building

The D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship, a Christian ministry to legislators, staffers, and interns on Capitol Hill, has acquired a permanent home two blocks from the U.S. Capitol building.

The new facility, a stately three-story row house built in 1890, will be the site of ministry activity and house the new D. James Kennedy Library on Capitol Hill. Renovations are already underway on the spacious structure in preparation for the grand opening in June.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the new center for ministry so close to where lawmakers and their staff work,” said Dr. John B. Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, the parent organization of the Center for Christian Statesmanship. “This elegant building will be an enormous asset to our outreach on Capitol Hill.”

Dr. Sorensen noted that the new D. James Kennedy Library “will help form Christian statesmen, as Members and staff access a library of some 2,000 volumes drawn from Dr. Kennedy’s personal collection, as well as about 2,000 sermons he preached during his lifetime.”

Founded in 1995 by the late D. James Kennedy, a minister, author, and evangelical leader, the Center for Christian Statesmanship has impacted thousands of lives by bringing a gospel witness, Christian discipleship, and a vision for Christian statesmanship to leaders in Washington.

The Center’s Executive Director George Roller leads a wide range of ministry activities, including “Politics and Principle Luncheons” at which Christian Members of Congress share their faith testimony; Bible studies for legislators, staffers and interns; special intern events, such as backyard barbecues, where hundreds of interns gather in a Christian setting; and special lectures where key Christian leaders and thinkers share a Christian witness to the Capitol Hill community.

“The Center does not do any sort of political action,” said Dr. Sorensen, leader of Evangelism Explosion which saw nearly eight million professions of faith in Christ worldwide in 2012. “We simply minister to Members of Congress, their staff, and those that come and serve as interns on Capitol Hill. It is our hope and prayer to see a dramatic expansion of the Center’s outreach with this wonderful new facility.”

In other news, the Board of Evangelism Explosion International approved the addition of three new Directors at the Board’s last meeting. The three new Directors are:

— Dr. Norman C. Blackaby, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at Dallas Baptist University, and co-author with his father, Dr. Henry Blackaby, of numerous books, including Experiencing Prayer with Jesus.

— Mrs. Marta Colon Perea, Academic Senator for the College of Business Administration, University of Puerto Rico.

— Mr. Mike Hudson, Director, Human Resources at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

These new Board members will serve on one or more of the committees of the Board, using their particular gifts and experience to assist the Board in overseeing the ministry work of Evangelism Explosion International.

Dr. David Self, Executive Pastor of First Baptist Church in Houston, serves as Chairman of the Board, and Dr. John B. Sorensen is President of Evangelism Explosion International.

During 2012, over 7.88 million people worldwide professed faith in Christ through Evangelism Explosion (EE). The interdenominational non-profit ministry was founded by the late Dr. D. James Kennedy, Founder and Senior Minister of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

[10] New Preaching Website Launched

A new preaching website, www.pssermons.net, has been launched by Bible Presbyterian Church pastors the Rev. Steven Brinegar, pastor of Grace Bible Presbyterian Church of Cape Canaveral, Florida, and the Rev. Tim Prussic, pastor of Columbia Bible Presbyterian Church in Scappoose, Oregon.

Pastor Brinegar writes:

“This site is dedicated to the craft of preaching the Word of God. I’m a pastor who loves preaching. Most Mondays, I give some time to thinking about my sermon form the pervious Sunday. Hindsight is a great teacher. As I think about my own successes and failures, I’m going to write about them.

“My method will be to think theologically and practically about preaching. These two, theory and practice, must always go hand in hand. Hindsight is an excellent teacher. These post scripts will look back at mistakes I’ve made, lessons I’ve learned, and applications I’ve missed all leading to improvement in my preaching. My prayer is God will bless my preaching and perhaps even you and your preaching as well.”
