Fulfilling the First Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

The redeemed of the Lord work to fulfill the first commandment.

Q 49: How do they who have been redeemed fulfill the first commandment?

A 49: The redeemed of the Lord fulfill the first commandment by pursuing holiness, renouncing all other gods, and exercising faithful stewardship unto the Lord. (Deut. 10:12-22; 2 Cor. 7:1; Deut. 6:13-15; John 14:6; Lev. 25:23, 24; Ps. 24:1; 1 Cor. 4:1-7)

Those who have come to know the Lord through our Lord Jesus Christ long to know and love Him better. Therefore, they willingly bring their lives into submission to Him and His will, resting in His Spirit as He instructs them in the ways of His Law and Word (Phil. 2:12, 13). Believers know that holiness pleases the Lord, Who is holy; therefore, they work to bring holiness to completion in the fear of God (2 Cor. 7:1). Because they also know truth, they know there are no gods beside the Lord, and they will not allow other things, whether tangible or imagined, to take the place of devotion and hope which belongs to the Lord only. And, since they know that everything they have and all their being and time are gifts from God, to be used for His glory, believers fulfill the duties of love for God by living as stewards of the Lord’s gifts, working to return glory to Him by every means.
