Fulfilling the Fourth Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

Believers must be vigilant in keeping the fourth commandment.

Q 76: How do the redeemed of the Lord fulfill the fourth commandment?

A 76: The redeemed of the Lord fulfill the fourth commandment by resting from their weekly occupations, observing holy convocations, and celebrating seasons of commemoration to the Lord. (Isa. 58:13, 14; Lev. 23:3; Lev. 23:4-6, 14-17)

We must remember that God intends this day, and other days and seasons patterned after it, to be “holy” unto Him. We must prepare well for the Sabbath, therefore, to ensure that normal occupations and preoccupations will not intrude upon our time of rest and worship in the Lord. Proper observation of the Lord’s Day requires planning, vigilance against all intrusions of the world or the flesh or the devil, and devotion to such practices and disciplines as will maximize our rest in the Lord for renewal in Him.
