Guarding the Name of the Lord

A Kingdom Catechism

Believers must be vigilant against sin in bearing God’s Name.

Q 69: How do the redeemed of the Lord take care not to profane His Name?

A 69: The redeemed of the Lord take care not to profane His Name by refusing to swear falsely, maintaining a careful self-watch in all their ways, resisting the devil and all temptation, and turning their feet to the Word of the Lord. (Lev. 19:12; Prov. 4:20-27; Jas. 4:7; 1 Cor. 10:13; Ps. 119:59, 60)

Taking the Name of the Lord is not restricted to oaths and vows. Taking God’s Name is a way of life and therefore requires that those who take His Name be continuously on guard against whatever might undermine or sidetrack their commitment. The devil is still active and powerful. The law of God yet operates in our souls. The world is dark but alluring. And everywhere The Lie seeks to draw us away from the Lord. Unless we exercise daily vigilance against all these threats, we shall surely be found profaning the Name of the Lord and thus to have taken His Name in vain.
