Lesson #21—Redeemer of God’s Elect

Shorter Catechism Q & A #21

Q. Who is the Redeemer of God’s elect?

A. The Only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ. Who being the eternal Son of God, became man, and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, forever.

Memorize Q & A – Exposition

The Redeemer who alone is capable of cleansing us of our sin, of paying the ransom price for our souls, and of satisfying the justice of God on our behalf is Christ Jesus (Joshua/Jehovah is salvation); the Second Person in the Godhead, the Son of God; who alone is both God and man in one person.

What does it mean?

What is meant by “The only Redeemer”? (1 Tim. 2:5–6; Acts 4:10–12)

What is revealed about the Redeemer in the following names?

  • Lord
  • Jesus
  • Christ
  • Son of God

How is the character and person of the Redeemer revealed in the following Scripture verse: Acts 10:36; Matt. 1:21; John 1:14; Gal. 4:4; Rom. 4:5; Luke 1:35; Col. 2:9; Heb. 7:24–25?

What is our practice?

What does it mean to look to Christ as our Redeemer? Do we see his divine character in our worship and daily life? Do we trust in Christ as our only Savior? Are we able to express this to our family, friends, etc.? How does this affect our fellowship with one another? Do others see Christ in us? How does our understanding of the Redeemer give us confidence in our faith and practice?

Quotes for thought and discussion:

Grace in Christ is communicative: “Grace in the saints is as water in a vessel, grace in Christ is as water in the spring. ‘Of his fullness have all we received and grace for grace.’ John i 16. Set a glass under a still and it receives water from it, drop by drop; so the saints have the drops and influences of Christ’s grace distilling upon them. What a rich consolation is this to those who either have no grace, or their stock is low! They may go to Christ, the Mediator, as a treasury of grace: Lord, I am indigent; but whither shall I carry my empty vessel, but to a full fountain? ‘All my springs are in thee.’ Psa lxxxvii 7. I am guilty, thou hast blood to pardon me; I am polluted, thou hast grace to cleanse me; I am sick unto death, thou hast the balm of Gilead to heal me. Joseph opened all the storehouses of corn: Christ is our Joseph, that opens all the treasuries and storehouses of grace, and communicates to us.” (Thomas Watson, A Body of Divinity)
