Law Matters: The Roadmap for Life (7)

Make sure you run your race on the course of God’s Law.

I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart! Psalm 119:32

The call to discipleship is like a race which we must run throughout the course of our lives (Heb. 12:1, 2). In a race, if you do not prepare well, or dawdle along the course, or stray into the infield, or become distracted from the goal, you will not finish well. And finishing to “Well done, good and faithful servant,” must be the goal of every believer’s race.

The surest way to run that race is along the course marked out by the commandments of God. Habakkuk was instructed to write the vision of God on tablets, so that all could read the will of God and run to do it immediately (Hab. 2:2). The Law has been written on our hearts (Rom. 2:14, 15). It is encoded in the books of Moses and proclaimed by the prophets of the Old Testament. The Lord Jesus embodied the Law for us, and His Apostles affirmed and extended its meaning beyond the mere letter of the Law into its Spirit of love and truth. The Spirit teaches us the Law and guides us along the path it indicates.

Our task is to run well—to prepare daily, enter the course focused on the objective, resist every distraction that might pull us out of the way, leap and hurdle any obstacles threatening our progress, encourage our fellow runners, and exert ourselves entirely—soul and body—in the way of obedience.

Let us run to learn and obey the Law of God, for this is the way to know full and abundant life in Jesus Christ. By running in the Law of God we grow in the mysteries and glories of our salvation in ways we may otherwise never know.

So do not delay. The roadmap for life is in your possession. Our Pioneer has shown the way. His Guide is ready to teach and empower us. We must make each day’s race one of steady progress along the path of righteousness which the Law of God describes.
