The Promise of the Sixth Commandment

A Kingdom Catechism

You can be like God.

Q 98: What does the Lord promise in the sixth commandment?

A 98: In exchange for obedience to the sixth commandment the Lord promises that it will be well with His people and they shall be like their Father, Who is in heaven. (Deut. 19:11-13; Matt. 5:43-48)

God is the Author and Father of life. He seeks the well-being and blessing of humankind, attending to our needs continuously, for the just and unjust alike. His attitude is ever one of love; His words and gestures are the same. God thus provides the model, especially in the example of our Lord Jesus Christ, for how we must love our neighbors and guard against wishing or doing them ill. To the extent that believers are diligent in this, they refract the glory of God and the image of our Lord Jesus Christ, and, being thus filled with all the fullness of God, may be assured that it will ever be well with their soul and with them.
