Q 41: How does the Spirit teach us to obey God’s Law?

A 41: As we read and meditate in God’s Law, and listen to faithful teaching, the Spirit of God compares Scripture with Scripture to bring us into the glory of God, where we are convicted, instructed, and empowered to walk in obedience to God’s Law. (1 Cor. 2:12, 13; 2 Cor. 3:12-18)

True learning begins in the Spirit’s convicting work. He uses the Word of God, beginning with His Law, to show us our sins and shortcomings, and to call us to repentance. At the same time, He points out the path of righteousness which Jesus walked, as if to say, “This is way, walk in it.” Then, He reminds us that we do not truly learn God’s Word until we obey it, and that God stands ready to discipline our every act of disobedience. Thus, as we are reading and studying the Law and Word of God, we must listen for the Spirit to convict us of sin—so that we may repent—and righteousness—so that we may take up new ways—and judgments—lest we come under the Lord’s discipline (John 16:8-11; Heb. 12:3-11).
