“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” [Ezekiel 33:6]

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  [Ephesians 6:12]

[1] Scotland’s Independence Vote “Yes” Campaign Leaves Out the King of Kings

A correspondent brought to the editor’s attention a book being widely circulated in Scotland arguing in favour of a “yes” vote on independence from Great Britain in the upcoming plebiscite. The book, titled “The Wee Blue Book” can be accessed here:

http://wingsoverscotland.com/WeeBlueBookDesktopEdition.pdf

The correspondent remarked:

“Out of interest, I did a quick word search.  No mention of ‘Christian’, ‘God’, ‘Presbyterian’, ‘Catholic’; no mention even of ‘religion’.  Apparently such things have no part in the voting decision.

“How sad for the Land of the Covenant.  I believe Scotland is still a nation under the Solemn League and Covenant (1643). Alas, for the insult given to the King of Kings.”

The Church of Scotland has scheduled a reconciliation service at Edinburgh’s St. Giles’ Cathedral for 21 September 2014 with the aim of healing divisions remaining after the 18 September 2014 vote.

[3] Queen Elizabeth II “Horrified” at Scottish Independence Possibility in Part Due to Monarch’s Oath to Preserve Church of Scotland

A 7 September 2014 The Australian article by Tim Shipman and Kate Mansey of The Times reports that Queen Elizabeth II and her household are “horrified” at the prospect of an independent Scotland, in part because of the monarch’s oath to preserve the Church of Scotland.

In May 2014, the Queen spoke of her desire to see the Kirk “healing divisions” and called on people of faith to “work together for the social good of Scotland whatever the outcome of the independence referendum”.

[4] Two Church of Scotland Ministers Quit to Free Church of Scotland Leaving One Kirk Minister to Cover West Highlands and Islands

A 5 September 2014 West Highland Free Press article by Lisa Falconer titled “Kirk in Crisis as Ministers Quit” reports that two Wester Ross Church of Scotland ministers, the Rev. David Macleod from Lochcarron and the Rev.  Roddy MacRae from Glenelg and Kintail have announced that they are joining the Free Church of Scotland, which leaves only one Kirk minister, the Rev. Sandor Fazakas to cover Wester Ross, Skye, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Harris and Assynt, an area the size of Wales, by himself.

Announcing his resignation 31 August 2014, the Rev. David Macleod said:

“Over the past few years I have found myself to be theologically less and less aligned with the Church of Scotland. I find myself now to have more in common with other denominations.

“The decision to demit has not been a decision I have rushed or taken lightly. I say this with a heavy heart and with much grief but I do not believe that I can continue in the context in which I find myself.”

Also announcing his resignation 31 August 2014, the Rev. Roddy MacRae said:

“The Church of Scotland often says it is a ‘broad church’, but it has become clear to me that it is not broad enough for Bible-believing Christians.

“I have been wrestling with this in prayer for quite some time now, and although I have a heavy heart, it makes sense to join a denomination with like-minded people where I can be fully supported.”

[9] Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Associate Professor of World Mission and Evangelism Johannes (“Jannie”) Swart Dies Suddenly on 9 September 2014

Writing on his Facebook page on 9 September 2014, Professor Robert A.J. Gagnon reported that Pittsburgh Theological Seminary Associate Professor of World Mission Johannes (“Jannie”) Swart died suddenly on 9 September 2014 while play Frisbee with a group of students. Swart leaves his wife and two high school age children.

Dr. Gagnon wrote of Swart:

“A devastating loss for the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary family….I served on the search committee that appointed Jannie and I was glad for his appointment. I knew him to be a good and faithful man of God. I grieve his loss. As Paul noted in Phil 1 it was better by far for he (Paul) to go and be with the Lord. So too with Jannie. But we here who remain feel his loss deeply.”

Another friend of Prof. Swart wrote:

“[He] had a remarkable spirit, wonderful sense of humor and a kind word for everyone. My heart breaks with the rest of our community. Rest in peace, dear friend. There is no doubt Jesus is waiting with open arms saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
