The Believer and the Law of God
A Kingdom Catechism
Believers must nurture a high regard for the Law of God.
Q 20: Given the nature, purpose, and promise of the Law, how should the believer regard it?
A 20: The believer must embrace the Law with his whole heart, nurturing love for God’s Law, developing understanding of the Law, and delighting in the performance of it. (Rom. 3:31; Rom. 7:12; Ps. 119:112; Ps. 119:97; Ps. 1; Ps. 40:8)
Just here we come to one of the greatest needs in the contemporary Church. Believers today, by and large, do not have the kind of regard for God’s Law which the Scriptures commend. We must not be afraid to read and study the Law of God, or to seek ways of applying it in our lives and times. The Law is holy and righteous and good (Rom. 7:12). The commandments define the way of love (1 Jn. 5:1-3). True believers will give themselves to the reading and study of God’s Law, so that they might delight in and love it, and bring their lives into line with its teaching (Ps. 119:59, 60) by the power of God’s Spirit and for the glory of Jesus Christ.
