The Basis for the Second Commandment
A Kingdom Catechism
God knows best how we must know and serve Him.
Q 56: What is the basis for the second commandment?
A 56: The basis for the second commandment is the Lord alone being God. It is an abomination and profaning of His Name to acknowledge Him in ways other than He prescribes, or to acknowledge other gods in any way; moreover, the Lord is extremely jealous for the love of His people. (1 Cor. 8:4; Deut. 18:9-12; Lev. 20:1-5; Exod. 20:5; Deut. 5:9)
God reveals to His people both how they are to know Him and what worship and service He requires of them. To add to what God prescribes, or to introduce other deities alongside God, is, in effect, to place oneself above God, as knowing better than God either how He ought to be worshiped or what else we may worship besides Him.
God intends that His people should love Him, but they must be content to love Him on His terms, as He prescribes, and not in ways of their own devising.
