[1] Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church 2013 Synod – Standing Ovation for Erskine/ARP Synod Relations – Invitation to RPCNA for Concurrent 2015 Synod Meetings

The Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARP) 2013 General Synod received the report of the Special Committee on the Synod-Erskine Relationship, as presented by committee chairman Kenneth B. Wingate.  The recommendation was approved to reaffirm Erskine College and Theological Seminary as a “valuable agency of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church” and to “continue to maintain a close working relationship with ongoing financial, spiritual and educational support for the institution,” as well as requesting that the Erskine Board of Trustees adopt a similar statement.

Additionally, the Synod strongly encouraged the Board of Trustees in its search for a new president, to hire an individual subscribing to Synod’s definition of an Evangelical and the Standards of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and having the necessary qualifications to pursue ErskineCollege and Seminary’s stated mission.

They also reaffirmed the Nominations Committee in selecting quality trustees for the Board. In cooperation with the Erskine Board of Trustees, the Synod approved the revision of the charter of ErskineCollege and Seminary in regards to the removal of board members and revised the Synod’s Board Member Removal Policy, so as to be uniform across all its boards, agencies and committees.

Synod referred the committee’s recommendation regarding Erskine Theological Seminary to the Board of Trustees.  The members of the special committee and the members of the Board of Trustees who worked on the charter changes received a standing ovation from the Synod, in appreciation for their diligent work on the Synod-Erskine relationship.  Finally, the Synod passed a motion commending the committees for their work and dissolving the special committee.

In other news, The 209th Associate Reformed Presbyterian Synod has approved am invitation to the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America (RPCNA) to hold concurrent Synod meetings in 2015 at the ARP Church’s Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The 2013 ARP Synod additionally passed a motion that the music at all joint worship services will be exclusively acapella psalmody, a distinctive of the RPCNA.

[3] Pro-Life U.S. Congresswoman Abused by Abortion Advocates after Her Unborn Child Diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome

In a 7 June 2013 letter to supporters titled “Adding Insult to Injury”, Bradley Mattes, Executive Director of the Life Issues Institute, responded to the abuse from abortion advocates being received by pro-life U.S. Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler of WashingtonState following her announcement that her unborn child had been diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome:

“No matter what lines are drawn in terms of issues or politics, I firmly believe in practicing compassion whenever someone is facing a crisis. Unfortunately, there are some in this world who defy civility and instead choose to act with spite. Sadly, I’ve witnessed such inhumane behavior this week.

“Just last month, pro-life Republican Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington joyfully announced she and her husband, Daniel, are pregnant with their first child. Then, this week at a routine ultrasound appointment, she received the tragic news that their unborn child has been diagnosed with Potter’s Syndrome. This condition results in low amniotic fluid due to impaired kidney function. It also inhibits lung development. The prognosis is grim—in the majority of cases the child will die within a few days after birth. Beutler bravely shared the news via Facebook and asked simply for prayers for a miracle and privacy for the family.

“While many responded with kindness and empathy, it didn’t take long before pro-abortion advocates began lashing out against Beutler. The National Catholic Register reported a host of the rude, condescending and callous comments that were made. As is expected with abortion supporters, they neglect to even recognize or respect the humanity of this very personal situation. They prefer to rely on typical, self-serving responses: politicizing the issue, making personal attacks and even cruelly advocating for this baby’s death by abortion.

“Pro-aborts often look at abortion as being nothing more than a political ideology—Democrats are for it and Republicans are against. Their response is to make it into a partisan argument, no matter what. Some of the remarks made toward Beutler include:

—       “Oh goody… and she’s GOP… let’s all watch this one develop. Let’s see if she follows the party line.”

—       “A clear case of politics colliding with a medical reality.”

—       “I feel for her in that the pregnancy could have been normal. I laugh at her in that her political ideology has her in a corner I would wish nobody in.”

“It’s as if they believe the only justification she has for not killing her child is because of her political affiliation. It’s easier to pretend it’s nothing more than a political game rather than to face the harsh reality of what they stand for, which is a death sentence for this innocent baby.

“Another defensive mechanism abortion advocates frequently use is personal attacks. This is nothing more than a distraction. It’s fueled by emotion rather than reason. In this case, they assault Beutler’s faith with comments like, “Sorry, prayers won’t do a d**n thing.” Some even resorted to calling her selfish for considering carrying the pregnancy to term. “To come to full-term for religious reasons is selfish and, well, foolish, but more importantly hurtful to the one who cannot speak for itself.” As if it’s somehow less selfish and more merciful to have the child brutally killed in the womb! Nothing could be further from the truth. This mother is only thinking of what’s in the best interests of her child.

“Lastly, (and most insulting) is that abortion supporters use this personal crisis to not just proclaim their cause, but to declare that abortion is the solution. These comments are nothing short of crass and cruel. It makes me heartsick to be reminded there are people who actually think this way. “Why not be proactive and get an abortion?” one comment asks. Another declares, “She should just go to a Planned Parenthood and be done with ‘it,’ after all, it’s not a human yet.” And finally, one makes this malicious recommendation, “Abort the baby. Wait a few months. Get pregnant again. This is not a big deal.” That sums up the pro-abort mindset. This isn’t a life to be cherished. It’s an insignificant problem and abortion is the easy solution.

“My heart goes out to the Beutler family. I hope they’re surrounded by love and support at this difficult time….”

[4] Center for Christian Statesmanship Dedicates New Home on Capitol Hill D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship Hosts 13 June 2013 Grand Opening for Recently Purchased Building on Capitol Hill

The D. James Kennedy Center for Christian Statesmanship hosted a gala Grand Opening of its new ministry facility on 13 June 2013 at the Center’s new location in Washington DC, two blocks from the U.S. Capitol building.

The Center for Christian Statesmanship, which serves legislators, staffers, and interns on Capitol Hill, recently purchased and renovated a stately four-story row house originally built in 1890. The facility serves as a center for ministry and houses on its third floor the new D. James Kennedy Library on Capitol Hill. Both the building and the Library were dedicated at the Grand Opening event.

“It is our hope and prayer to see a dramatic expansion of the Center’s outreach with this wonderful new facility,” said Dr. John B. Sorensen, President of Evangelism Explosion International, the parent organization of the Center for Christian Statesmanship. “This elegant building will be an enormous asset to the Center’s outreach on Capitol Hill.”

Dr. Sorensen noted that the new D. James Kennedy Library “will help form Christian statesmen, as Members and staff access a library of some 2,000 volumes drawn from Dr. Kennedy’s personal collection, as well as about 2,000 sermons he preached during his lifetime.”

“We are absolutely thrilled to have the new center for ministry so close to where lawmakers and their staff work,” Sorensen said, noting that the new ministry complex is two blocks from the U.S. Capitol building and within easy walking distance of Congressional office buildings.

Founded in 1995 by the late D. James Kennedy, a minister, author, and evangelical leader, the Center for Christian Statesmanship has impacted thousands of lives by bringing a gospel witness, Christian discipleship, and a vision for Christian statesmanship to leaders in Washington.

The Center’s Executive Director Dr. George Roller leads a wide range of ministry activities, including “Politics and Principle Luncheons” at which Christian Members of Congress share their faith testimony; Bible studies for legislators, staffers and interns; special intern events, such as backyard barbecues, where hundreds of interns gather in a Christian setting; and special lectures where key Christian leaders and thinkers share a Christian witness to the Capitol Hill community.

[5] Pope’s “Pontificate” Consecrated to “Our Lady Of Fatima”

Pope Frances asked that his “pontificate” be consecrated to “Our Lady of Fatima” in Portugal. In response, Jose Polycarp, Patriarch of Lisbon, prayed to the Fatima Mary on May 13 as follows:

“Grant (Pope Francis) the gift of discernment to know how to identify the paths of renewal for the Church, grant him the courage to not falter in following the paths suggested by the Holy Spirit, protect him in the difficult hours of suffering, so that he may overcome, in charity, the trials that the renewal of the Church will bring him” (EWTN News, May 14, 2013).

He also prayed that Francis would be able to bless humanity by teaching them that Mary “leads them with tenderness on the paths of salvation.”

To attribute any element of spiritual blessing and salvation to Mary is heresy and blasphemy, and every ecumenical-minded “evangelical” and “Protestant” and “Baptist” who keeps his mouth shut in the face of this wickedness will answer to God. “Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and betrayeth it not” (Prov. 29:24). “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds: (2 John 1:10-11).
