“But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.” [Ezekiel 33:6]

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  [Ephesians 6:12]

[2] Tampa, Florida Church Pastor Pleads Guilty to Operating a US$5 Million Ponzi Scheme – Faces up to Twenty Years in Prison

A 1 November 2013 article in The Christian Post by Michael Gryboski titled “Fla. Pastor Pleads Guilty to Ponzi Scheme, Could Face 20 Years in Prison” reports that Pastor Charles Lawrence Kennedy Jr. of the Glorious Church of God in Christ of Tampa, Florida has pled guilty to orchestrating a Ponzi scheme that took as much as US$5 million from investors across the U.S., most of which was used for Kennedy’s personal belongings and expenses, with a small amount paid to the original investors.

Ryan Parker of the Denver Post reported:

“”Kennedy solicited investments from fellow pastors and members of their congregations through his company, Keys to Life Corporation, and promised for every [US]$1,000 invested, the minimum return would be [US]$1 million, which would be paid within ninety days”

Attorney John Walsh of the U.S. District of Colorado said:

“The defendant used his position as a Pastor to solicit funds from investors with promises of substantial returns.

“Instead of investing the funds, he and others used the money for unauthorized purposes. The defendant’s abuse of his position of trust led to 100 people losing their hard earned money, for which the defendant will now face the consequences.”

[Editor’s Note: Cornerstone Ministries Investments, Inc. (CMI) operated what a special counsel to the organization’s 2008 bankruptcy called a “[US]$140 million Ponzi scheme” that bilked 3500 institutional and individual investors out of the vast majority of their invested assets.

CMI was originated in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) in 1985 as Investors Fund for Building & Development and was dismissed by the 1994 PCA General Assembly under a cloud of suspicion. (See Christian Observer Vol. 172 #10 article by Darrell Todd Maurina). The PCA Teaching Elders that ran IFB&D then morphed into Presbyterian Investors Fund, a non-profit company, they founded in December of 1985 and eventually merged PIF into CMI, a for profit company. The now-almost three decade history of what resulted in the CMI Ponzi scheme is detailed in several Christian Observer articles that can be accessed by using the search terms “Ponzi”, “Cornerstone Ministries Investments”, “bankruptcy”, and “unfinished business” at christianobserver.org.

To date, none of the former CMI officials or PCA figures involved with the CMI Ponzi scheme and subsequent bankruptcy have been brought to justice in federal, state, or church courts. The PCA’s Metro Atlanta Presbytery (MAP) continues to have in good standing two teaching elders that were formerly CMI executives that were sanctioned by the U.S. bankruptcy court for their misconduct. MAP has rebuffed several attempts to hold the two teaching elders accountable for their actions while at CMI.]

[3] PCUSA Covenant Network of Presbyterians 2013 Annual Meeting on Theme of “Marriage Matters” Told Exclusive Focus on Heterosexual Marriage Is Not Biblical or Reformed, and That the Gospel Demands Marriage Equality

The Covenant Network of Presbyterians, held their 2013 annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois, 1-2 November 2013 with the theme “Marriage Matters”, and heard Princeton Theological Seminary professor and systematic theologian William Stacy Johnson say that the Gospel demands that the church open marriage to all people and the church risks becoming irrelevant if it doesn’t “get with the program”.

Johnson added:

“All of Reformed theology and liturgy assumes that gospel is a task, a journey. Resurrection means that God isn’t finished with us, that the gospel hasn’t come into complete fruition. It informs us that God is for us, Jesus is with us and the Holy Spirit is among us. Marriage is one place where that truth can be recognized and exhibited despite our flaws and failures.”

“The burden of proof used to be on LGBTQs (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer persons) to prove their worth. The burden of proof is now on the church to explain why we were so stingy for so long. The situation is so bad that now the burden of proof is on the church to prove it really matters, that it’s relevant in the real world.

“There is no such thing as gay marriage. There is simply marriage. And gay and lesbian people want theirs recognized. And people get it. They’re not stupid.”

Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary professor of doctrinal theology Amy Pauw said that exclusive focus on heterosexual marriage runs counter to biblical teaching and Reformed theology, commenting “Marriage matters to Christians, but life in Christ matters more.”

Pauw continued:

“If a Christian marriage is defined by the peace of Christ ruling over hearts rather than by rigid gender roles, then the question [of same sex marriage] doesn’t matter.”

“The survival of the Jewish people depended on procreation. That’s why it’s odd to contemporary Christians to read about polygamy, ‘wasting seed,’ and men marrying their widowed sisters-in-law ? ideas that are no longer regarded as normative.”

“Who are the role models for marriage? Jesus, who was single and created an unrelated ‘family’ out of his disciples? Jesus was rather dismissive about marriage, telling his followers in Luke to ‘be prepared to hate parents, spouses and children.’ In Jesus’ teaching, marriage is not a sign of the Kingdom but part of the old order of things….Marriage is only for this age not part of the age to come….So much for Christian dating sites that promise an eternal partner.”

“We all know that traditional heterosexual marriage is in trouble. Fewer young people are buying into it and we see rising rates of single-parent families, divorce and domestic violence. So for Christians, marriage equality is not a matter of straights inviting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people into a healthy institution, but helping the church redefine what healthy marriage really is.”

“Marriage is not a sacrament. Calvin calls it ‘an earthly ordinance,’ like farming, building, cobbling and barter ? a cooperative human activity that aims at creaturely comfort.”

“But the centrality of one kind of relationship does not exclude the creation of other kinds of relationships. [Heterosexual marriage] has never been the only example of human flourishing and won’t be in the future.”

[5] 915 Crosses Set Up on Grounds of U.S. Capitol 31 October 2013 Representing Number of Unborn Killed Every Day at Planned Parenthood Abortuaries

The Christian Defense Coalition and Students for Life of America on 31 October 2013 set up 915 pink crosses on the lawn of the U.S. Capitol to represent the number of unborn killed every day at Planned Parenthood Abortuaries.

Reformed Presbyterian pastor and Director of the Christian Defense Coalition the Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, stated;

“The scariest thing this Halloween in Washington, D.C. is the fact that Congress gives [US]$540,000,000 in taxpayer funds to an organization that kills 915 children a day.  That is the number of children that die every day at Planned Parenthood abortion clinics across America.  It also must be remembered that Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the world.

“These 915 crosses will be a powerful visible reminder to the members of Congress of the tragic loss of life every day at Planned Parenthood clinics, and the fact that now is the time to de-fund them and Obamacare.  We should give these funds to women’s clinics that provide quality health care and embrace human rights and justice for all.

“The situation is even more ‘terrifying’ when one realizes that Planned Parenthood has [US]$1,000,000,000 in assets and makes a yearly [US]$120,000,000 profit from their abortion business.”

Kristan Hawkins, President of Students for Life of America, adds,

“As you may know, this April, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a regulation ordering health insurance companies to cover Planned Parenthood clinics in their state exchange plans. In addition, Sebelius’ HHS has labeled pregnancy as a ‘preventable disease’ requiring all health insurance providers to cover at 100 percent potentially abortion-inducing, cancer-causing contraception in every health insurance plan nationwide- almost guaranteeing Planned Parenthood hundreds of millions in new taxpayer funding.

“It’s time for Congress to take serious the demands by ordinary citizens to de-fund Planned Parenthood once and for all. Taxpayer funds should never be used to promote or perform abortions… and that’s what Planned Parenthood is all about.”

The 39th meeting of the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council (NAPARC) is scheduled 19-20 November 2013 at the Bonclarken Conference Center in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Dr. Mark Ross, John R. de Witt Professor of Systematic Theology and Director of the Institute for Reformed Worship at Erskine Theological Seminary will be the speaker following dinner.

The purpose of NAPARC is to facilitate discussion and consultation between member bodies on those issues and problems which divide them as well as on those which they face in common; promote the appointment of joint committees to study matters of common interest and concerns; exercise mutual concern in the perpetuation, retention, and propagation of the Reformed faith; promote cooperation wherever possible and feasible on the local and denominational level in such areas as missions, relief efforts, Christian schools, and church education.

[12] Horror File Concerning Recent Ruling of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA)’s Standing Judicial Committee (SJC)’s Rulings on Three 2013 General Assembly Overtures Dealing with the Peter Leithart case; New Trinity Review “”Richard Gaffin’s New Perspective on Paul” by Dr. Paul M. Elliott”; and 2013 Christian Worldview Essay Contest Winners – Available on Trinity Foundation Website

The Trinity Foundation on 5 November 2013 posted its latest “Horror File” concerning the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA)’s Standing Judicial Committee (SJC)’s Rulings on Three 2013 General Assembly Overtures dealing with the Peter Leithart case, which is available here:

http://www.trinityfoundation.org/horror_show.php?id=56

The Trinity Foundation has additionally posted the latest Trinity Review to its website. “Richard Gaffin’s New Perspective on Paul” by Dr. Paul M. Elliott is a reprint of Chapter 6 of Christianity and Neo-Liberalism: The Spiritual Crisis in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and Beyond with an added preface to bring it up-to-date. Since retiring from Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Richard Gaffin has been making the rounds at various conferences and has been editing and contributing to several books, the latest of which is Thy Word Is Still Truth: Essential Writings on the Doctrine of Scripture from the Reformation to Today, which he co-edited and co-wrote with Dr. Peter Lillback. Further, Dr. Gaffin is scheduled to speak at Tenth Presbyterian Church (PCA) in March 2014 as part of the James Montgomery Boice Center Lecture Series on the topic of “Inerrancy and Inspiration.” Thus Dr. Paul Elliott’s article is very apropos.

In other news, The Trinity Foundation announced the winners of the 2013 Christian Worldview Essay Contest.

The First Prize of US$3,000 and fifteen books was awarded to C. Jay Engel of Folsom, California for his essay titled, “Gordon Clark on Science and Behaviorism.”

No Second Prize was awarded this year.

The Third Prize of $1,000 and five books was awarded to Conrad Martin of Ephrata, Pennsylvania for his essay titled, “Behaviorism: The Broken Machine.”

All contestants had to read Gordon Clark’s Behaviorism and Christianity and The Philosophy of Science and Belief in God and write an essay on the books.
