Everyday Idols, Every Day
The Law of God for Daily Meditation
Morning Meditation
Deuteronomy 6:13-15
13 You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name. 14 You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you 15 (for the Lord your God is a jealous God among you), lest the anger of the Lord your God be aroused against you and destroy you from the face of the earth.
Exodus 23:13
“And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard from your mouth.”
Exodus 22:20
“He who sacrifices to any god, except to the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed.”
God is serious about not allowing idols any place in your soul. What idols are likely to try to woo me today? How can I recognize them? What steps can I take to maintain my rightful place before God in the face of such idols?
Evening Meditation
Deuteronomy 17:2-7
2 “If there is found among you, within any of your gates which the LORD your God gives you, a man or woman who has been wicked in the sight of the LORD your God, in transgressing His covenant, 3 who has gone and served other gods and worshiped them, either the sun or the moon or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, 4 and it is told you and you hear of it, then you shall inquire diligently. And if it is indeed true and certain that such an abomination has been committed in Israel, 5 then you shall bring out to your gates that man or woman who has committed that wicked thing, and shall stone to death that man or woman with stones. 6 Whoever is deserving of death shall be put to death on the testimony of two witnesses or of three witnesses; he shall not be put to death on the testimony of one witness. 7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hands of all the people. So you shall put away the evil from among you.”
Deuteronomy 23:17, 18
17 “There shall be no ritual harlot of the daughters of Israel, or a perverted one of the sons of Israel. 18 You shall not bring the wages of a harlot or the price of a dog to the house of the Lord your God for any vowed offering, for both of these are an abomination to the LORD your God.”
Idolatry begins in covetousness (Col. 3:5). Have I been covetous today? Am I harboring any false gods in my heart? Are my walk with the Lord and my work for Him compromised by or tainted with things that are not pleasing to Him?
