Taking God’s Name
The Law of God for Daily Meditation

Morning Meditation

Exodus 20:7

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”

Deuteronomy 5:11

“‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.’”

“In vain” means “to no effect” or “in a manner contrary” to the character of God’s Name. How am I likely today to be tempted to take the Lord’s name in this way? What can I do to “take” His name as He intends?

Evening Meditation

Leviticus 19:12

“And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 24:15, 16

15 “Then speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. 16 And whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall certainly stone him, the stranger as well as him who is born in the land. When he blasphemes the name of the LORD, he shall be put to death.”

My words must always be seasoned with grace and used to edify others in the Lord (Col. 4:6; Eph. 4:29). Have I failed in any way today to use my words as the Lord intends? Have I promised anything to Him which I have not fulfilled?
