The Key to the Promises of God

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 2 Peter 1:3, 4

How, then, do we press on to learn, obey, and grow in the Law of God? It begins by understanding God’s precious and very great promises. When we believed into Jesus we inherited a raft of promises that reaches all the way back to Abraham and the patriarchs (2 Cor. 1:20). All the promises are ours in Jesus; thus, as we gaze on Him, and the glory that is in His face (2 Cor. 4:6), the promises of God begin to emerge and attract us.

What are the promises of God?

As we see these precious and very great promises articulated to Abraham they come down to six. God promised Abraham that He would make Him a great nation, give Him a great and influential name, bless him and bless others through him, protect and provide for him, and extend His blessings to all the families of the earth, in all places and times. These same promises, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, now belong to all those who, like Abraham, believe into Jesus and cling to Him (Rom. 4:13-16). The more we understand just how precious and very great these promises are, the more we will desire to possess and experience them for ourselves.

And the key to this is obedience to God’s Law (Deut. 19:8, 9). As we grow in obedience to God’s Law we find that the precious and very great promises He has given us in Christ become increasingly real in our lives. We find ourselves rejoicing to be part of a great nation of the saints of God – “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession” (1 Pt. 2:9), with brothers and sisters from among every nation and time. We know the blessings of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness, and we find that, as our hope in Him becomes more alive and visible, others are curious concerning how they may have it for themselves (1 Pt. 3:15). As people observe our obedience to God’s Law, and the many blessings that come from it, they will resolve to come and learn for themselves from those churches where that Law is taught (Mic. 4:1-5). Thus we begin to know influence for righteousness and to spread the blessings of God to the people around us – all because we choose to grow in understanding of and obedience to God’s Law.

All the Word of God is important, of course, and we must read and study it diligently, that it may equip us for every good work (2 Tim. 3:15-17). But the Law of God is the core component of Scripture, the first course of The Kingdom Curriculum, and an essential element in enabling us to gain and enjoy all the precious and very great promises of God. Learn the promises and you will desire them greatly, and they will lead you to learn and obey the Law of God.
