“Too much of a good thing isn’t good for you.” We all heard that as kids from parents who didn’t want us to overindulge on food or TV or whatever. This principle, applied, say, to those little orange candy corns, is certainly sound. To this day I get a queasy stomach just looking at those one-time favorite Halloween treats.

But this is not true where the Law of God is concerned. We can never get enough of God’s Law. Its benefits and blessings are so many, varied, and wondrous that, the more we study and apply God’s Law, the more it multiplies the favor of God to us. No wonder David spoke of the Law in these terms–more to be desired than much fine gold and sweeter than the sweetest honey.

But just try convincing today’s Christians of this. My experience, as I talk and teach about the Law of God, is that people think it’s like Brussels sprouts or some other horrid food. Oh, yeah, sure, it might be good for you; but who wants to eat that stuff? All those negatives. All that legalism. I’m not under Law; I’m under grace.

But the Law of God is one thing you can never over-desire or over-consume. God has set us free in His Law to meet Him in His holiness, dwell with Him in His glory, and reflect Him to the watching world, as Jesus is more perfectly formed in us by His Spirit. The Law of God is the meat and potatoes of a healthy Christian’s spiritual diet. If you are depriving yourself of the Law, you’ll never grow to maturity in the Lord.
