A Program for the Divine Economy

A Kingdom Catechism

The Law of God outlines the program of the divine economy.

Q 1:  What is the Law of God?

A 1: The Law of God is God’s program, which Jesus fulfilled, for bringing into being a people holy and blameless before Him in love. (Eph. 1:3, 4; Rom. 7:12; Matt. 5:17-19)

Because the Law is from God it necessarily reflects His character and concerns. The Law expresses the holy character of God and shows men how they must live together in ways that reflect the bond of love which unites the Persons of the divine Trinity. Men, being sinful, are inclined to love themselves first of all and, typically, at the expense of others. The Law of God runs contrary to humankind’s natural sinfulness and, thus, provides a program of righteousness, peace, and joy which brings the reality of God and His glory into the affairs of a fallen world.

But sinful people will have no heart for God’s Law unless and until God gives them one (cf. Deut. 5:29; 30:1-10; Ezek. 36:26, 27). Sinful men will always resent and resist the rule of God over their lives, even though submitting to that rule is the way of true love and justice. Jesus Christ is thus the key to breaking free of the bonds of sin in order to live in true freedom and love, in the power of God’s Spirit, according to God’s Law and all His Word. God by His grace woos and wins people to Himself so that they recognize and embrace the work of Jesus Christ for their salvation and own Him as Savior and Lord.

All who come to know God through Jesus Christ find the Law of God, which Jesus fulfilled, to be holy and righteous and good. They gladly embrace the Law of God as the instrument of God’s Spirit for working out their salvation in fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12, 13; Ezek. 36:26, 27). For all who believe and follow Jesus, the Law marks out the pathway to Kingdom greatness in a world which, though fallen, has been, and is being, reconciled to God through Jesus Christ (1 John 2:1-6).
