“In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Who are the most outspoken and consistent haters of God’s Law? Who have banished the Law from the classrooms of our schools and the courtrooms of our land? Who have pushed the Law out of the public square so that its liberating influence scarcely reaches the halls of legislatures? Who rails and chafes and gnashes their teeth any time mention is made of the Law of God in polite conversation?
No, not the members of the Christian community–although we are complicit in this rabid conspiracy. It’s people in the world, people who don’t want God telling them how they should or should not live. In the world, Jesus said, we will have tribulation, just as He did. One of the reasons He had so much trouble was that He lived and taught the Law of God without compromise, and He confronted and rebuked those who did not. He was fearless when it came to obeying God’s Law and insisting of others they do the same.
If you act in public as though you think the Law of God is, like, some kind of viable moral code, people in the world will go for your jugular. Big deal. God will be nodding approval, since He is determined to judge everyone by the Law of liberty, and He Himself, having planted the knowledge of the works of the Law in the hearts of all men is working harder than we are to get them to obey it (Rom. 2:14, 15).
Jesus counsels us not to be afraid of men who yelp and howl and pick up stones whenever we seek to intrude the Law of God into their lives. By keeping the Law and holding our ground in defense of it, all we’re doing is imitating Jesus, Who has already overcome the world for us, and Who will be overcoming the world in and through us as we walk in His footsteps.
So let ‘em rail and threaten. Stay the course with God’s Law, and watch all your fears of this lawless age melt away.
Daily meditation in the Law of God helps us along the path of holiness, righteousness, and goodness (Rom. 7:12).
