For the Shaping of Our Souls
Law Matters: The Roadmap for Life (5)
Following God’s Law must begin within our souls.
I will praise you with an upright heart when I learn your righteous rules. Psalm 119:7
Our Guide will work first of all to impress the roadmap for life on our inward being, upon our very souls. His intention is to store the Law within our souls and to shape us—heart, mind, and conscience—according to the definition of life God has encoded there (Ps. 119:9-11). The Spirit is ready to teach us, and we must be faithful in His class. He wants us to understand, love, and value the Law as the guiding Light of our lives.
Let us pray for the Spirit of God to open our eyes so that we may see the beauties and wonders of God’s Law and learn to delight in it (Ps. 119:18). He can give us understanding into the mysteries of the Law, so that we are willing and able to follow it (Ps. 119:34). He can enlarge our hearts to embrace the Law and delight in it (Ps. 119:32, 47). The Spirit can improve our judgment so that we understand how to make application of God’s Law in everyday life (Ps. 119:66). He leads us to read and meditate in God’s Law day by day and throughout the day (Ps. 119:98). He teaches us little by little, unfolding the precepts and statutes of the Law in ways that move us from simplicity to wisdom (Ps. 119:130). And He gives us peace and assurance to fill our souls when we love this Law as the roadmap for our lives (Ps. 119:165).
For the Spirit to teach us God’s Law, make us willing to follow it, and empower us for obedience, we must come to the Law day by day. Reading, study, meditation, talking with our fellow believers—this is the way the Spirit structures the classroom where He works to inscribe the roadmap for life within the deep seams and recesses of our souls.
Let us resort to this classroom every day.
