Looking for Him Everywhere

The third commandment

Exodus 20.4, 7; Deuteronomy 5.11

“You shall not take the Name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His Name in vain.”

Song 3.2

I will rise now and go about the city, in the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves.

Seek the Lord everywhere He may be found.

They who bear the Name of the Lord seek Him earnestly and at all times (Ps. 63.1; Ps. 105.4). In every situation they are aware that He is present, watching over them to counsel, comfort, and correct. They realize that He is revealing His glory in everything He has made (Ps. 19.1-4), and they are eager for every glimpse of their Beloved. Seeking the Lord becomes the life context of all who truly know and love Him. They work hard to keep their minds set on Him (Col. 3.1-3). They know that He watches over their paths, so they labor to walk in the way of light and truth (Ps. 1.6). They look for His wisdom and goodness in the smallest created things, are grateful for His steadfast love and faithfulness in upholding them by His Word of power, and talk with one another eagerly about His many virtues and glories (Eph. 5.18-21). The highest priority in every aspect of their lives is to become more submissive to His rule and to make more contribution to the progress of His Kingdom (Matt. 6.33). They know that their Bridegroom has prepared a vast treasury of riches – spiritual fruit, gifts, and power – for them to enjoy, and they eagerly seek it from Him, so that they might bear His Name and glory before the watching world. We take the Lord’s Name in vain if we do not seek Him.

Would you describe yourself as one who seeks the Lord? What would others see in your life to make them conclude that was true of you?
