Q 95: How do the redeemed of the Lord refrain from hatred and grudges?

A 95: The redeemed of the Lord refrain from hatred and grudges by giving thanks and rejoicing in the midst of all trials and turning the other cheek against those who offend. (1 Thess. 5:18; Jas. 1:2-4; Matt. 5:38-45)

“Contraries are by contraries cured.” Thus the Celtic Christian penitential manuals instructed “doctors of the soul” to help their neighbors grow in obedience to God. Wherever something—an attitude, mindset, priority, or practice—was present that was contrary to the Law of God, the pastor’s or soul friend’s duty was to prescribe a “contrary” action, and to help his flock or friend to work through to love. Thus, in place of hatred and grudges toward others, we must learn to nurture appreciation for them as image-bearers of God and those for whom Christ died; and we must give thanks to God and look for ways of showing love where, left unchecked, anger might give rise to hatred and harm. Such advice, Jesus explained, applies to our relationships with all men, including our enemies.
