Law Matters: The Roadmap for Life (4)
Jesus has sent us a Guide to help us along our way.
“And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules… and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.” Ezekiel 36:27, 28
The Law of God—with its commandments, statutes, precepts, and rules—can be a complicated and confusing map to follow at times. The Lord Jesus was able to negotiate it perfectly because He is the Son of God and Man. He is the very Source and Center of all wisdom and knowledge (Col. 2:3). We, however, blighted with sin, finite in understanding, and too easily wooed by distractions and diversions of every sort, need rather more help than our own wits and will in making our way along the roadmap of life. Thanks be to God! He has sent a Guide to be in us and to lead us along the way.
The Spirit of God is the perfect Guide for this journey. He not only teaches us the way we should go, but He makes us willing to travel that way and gives us the power we need in order to do so (John 16:13; Phil. 2:13). Our responsibility is to seek the filling of the Holy Spirit, to submit to His teaching and to listen as He searches and instructs our souls, and to draw on His power, in everyday acts of obedience, to live our witness to Christ (Eph. 5:18-21; Ps. 139:23, 24; Acts 1:8). The Spirit can teach us the right way to read the roadmap for life. He creates in us a desire to do so, until we actually begin to delight in reading and meditating in the Law of God (Ps. 119:97). And He leads us into everyday situations, the Law of God on our hearts, and enables us to act according to the requirements of love for God and neighbors (Matt. 22:34-40).
We could have no benefit from the Law of God without our Pioneer to blaze the trail and our Guide to lead us along, each step of the journey. With them, however, we may confidently follow this roadmap for life as we pursue holiness in the fear of God (2 Cor. 7:1).
