Renounce All Other Gods
A Kingdom Catechism
Believers must guard against all false idols.
Q 51: How do the redeemed of the Lord renounce all other gods?
A 51: The redeemed renounce all other gods by clinging to Jesus Christ only for their salvation, seeking the glory of God alone in all they do, and doing all things as unto the Lord always. (John 14:6; 1 Cor. 10:31; Col. 3:23, 24)
Renouncing other gods begins in recognizing that anything or anyone which commands the devotion, attention, and energy which the Lord commands of His people has become a substitute for God and, thus, a god in its own right. Whatever people look to for fulfillment, joy, peace, happiness, contentment, or any such affections or conditions has become an idol, since God alone is able to provide, and promises to provide, such benefits to those who love and fear Him. By recognizing all such idols in our lives and turning our affections toward God, we put such things in a proper perspective, so that they do not command and direct our lives, but benefit and equip us for living holy lives unto the Lord.
By meditating on Jesus, walking with Him along the path of holiness, serving Him by loving our neighbors, bearing witness to Him, and seeking the Lord’s will and glory in all matters, we may check our natural (sinful) tendency toward idolatry and become more focused and devoted in the pursuit of holiness.
