The Civil Law

A Kingdom Catechism

The civil laws are guides to neighbor-love.

Q 7: What is the place of the civil laws in the Law of God?

A 7: The civil laws, based on the Ten Commandments, guide the redeemed of the Lord in understanding how they must love one another and work together for justice. (Lev. 18:1-5; Deut. 16:18-20)

The civil laws of Israel encompass the precepts, rules, statutes, and testimonies of the Law of God. It was the duty of every Israelite to learn these statutes and to hold fast to them. It was the special duty of priests and heads of households to teach all the Law of God, and of the judges of Israel’s cities to be able to render decisions of law according to the teaching of these statutes.
