The First Commandment
The Law of God for Daily Meditation

Morning Meditation:
Exodus 20:1-3
1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 You shall have no other gods before Me.” Exodus 20:1-3

Which comes first, salvation or keeping the Law? Why should I keep God’s Law, if not to save me? How bleak were things, and how great was the bondage I experienced in my Egypt? How glorious was the day when the Lord birthed me into His Kingdom of Light? None of the “gods” I worshiped before knowing the Lord ever did so much for me: How can I not love my Redeemer and Savior exclusively and always?

Evening Meditation:
Deuteronomy 5:4-7
4 “The LORD talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: 6 ‘I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 7 You shall have no other gods before Me.’”

What evidence did I see this day of the Lord’s ongoing, steadfast love for me? What evidence did I observe of the feebleness and folly of the gods of this world? Do I fear God as He deserves? And, at the same time, do I love Him because of Who He is and what He has done? What thanks can I give Him now? What resolution concerning tomorrow am I willing to make?
