The Kingdom Curriculum I (2)

.

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 14:17

.

Jesus insisted that those who lived and taught the commandments of God would be great in the Kingdom He had come to bring near to men (Matt. 5:19). That Kingdom is animated, sustained, and brought to expression by the Spirit of God, Who advances it on earth unto righteousness, peace, and joy within and through those to whom the Kingdom has come.

.

Jesus instructed His followers to pray that the Kingdom of God would come on earth as it is in heaven (Matt. 6:10). He commanded us to seek the Kingdom and righteousness of God as our highest priority in this life (Matt. 6:33). And He gave us His Spirit to remind us of the things He had taught and to work within us to make us willing and able to do what He commands (Jn. 14:26; Jn. 16:13; Phil. 2:12, 13).

.

It is reasonable to assume, therefore, that one of the most powerful resources the Spirit of God wields in sanctifying and equipping us for the Kingdom is the Law of God. The Law of God exposes our sin (Rom. 7:7); then the Spirit liberates us from the judgment of sin, through the righteousness of Jesus, and empowers us to walk in the ways of the commandments of God (2 Cor. 3:12-18; Ezek. 36:26, 27). It is safe to say that there can be no filling of the Spirit, no fruit from the Spirit’s presence and ministry, and no significant gifting of the Spirit for ministry apart from the Law of God.

.

As the Lord declared through the prophet Ezekiel, “And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules” (36:27). No claim to be born of the Spirit, or to know any blessedness or gifting of the Spirit, can be validated apart from the course content which the Spirit Himself brings to the Kingdom curriculum of Christ. And that begins in the Law of God.
