The Substance of the Fifth Commandment
A Kingdom Catechism
The fifth commandment extends to all human relationships.
Q 84: What is the substance of the fifth commandment?
A 84: The substance of the fifth commandment is that the redeemed of the Lord must give all proper deference, honor, and obedience to all men and creatures, according to the order of the Lord. (Gen. 1:26-28; Ps. 8; Ps. 115:16; Rom. 13:1-5)
What children learn at home about relating to their parents will carry over into all other relationships—with others in authority over them, with their neighbors, and even with the creation itself. This makes it so important that parents teach their children well and guide them in developing those affections of the heart that will enable them to love God and their neighbors according to the plan of the divine economy.
