The Substance of the Ninth Commandment
A Kingdom Catechism
We are made for truth.
Q 120: What is the substance of the ninth commandment?
A 120: The substance of the ninth commandment is that we must ever live and speak truthfully to God and to our neighbors, always seeking to be faithful and just in all matters. (Deut. 6:16-19; Lev. 19:11; Lev. 19:15, 16)
God is truth. God made the world in truth. He speaks truthfully to men and calls us to live truthfully with one another. Truth reflects both the reality of God and the design of the universe. Truth sets men free from bondage to unbelief and sin (John 8:32). To speak in any way other than truth is to betray God and bring corruption into human relations. Love for God and neighbor requires that we speak truth in love at all times.
